Ceremonial groundbreaking held for residence hall /ceremonial-groundbreaking-held-for-residence-hall/ Thu, 01 May 2025 01:33:44 +0000 /ceremonial-groundbreaking-held-for-residence-hall/

ߣѿƬ Southern University held a ceremonial groundbreaking on Tuesday, April 29 in celebration of the new residence hall construction set for this summer. The new building will mirror Barbara C. Mead Hall, built in 2019.

“It’s an historic day for ߣѿƬ Southern,” President B. Keith Faulkner said, addressing the crowd of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and board members. “Look around—60 years ago, this campus was just dirt. We’re just so blessed to be here, and we want to continue to ask for God’s blessings as we grow this university.”

Construction is set to break ground this summer and be completed by August of 2026—in time to welcome Buccaneers that fall semester. The newest three-story suite-style residence hall will house 216 students.

Brittney Greer, associate VP for student life, said, “As we turn the soil today, we are planting seeds for the future. Seeds of community, seeds of transformation, seeds of hope. May this be a place where dreams are nurtured, where talents are discovered and where every life glorifies God.”

With an increase in housing demand each year since Mead Hall, the university has utilized the Wingate Hotel on its campus for overflow housing—filling it for the last three years. The new 52,000-square-foot building will stand beside Mead Hall with a courtyard between the two residences for students to enjoy a fun outdoor community space.

Krystal Guntinas, a senior and current resident assistant, said that CSU was never just a university to her. “It has been my home—I came here from the Philippines thousands of miles away from everything I was familiar with. But it did not take long before this place and the people made me feel like I belonged. It was here on this campus that I truly met Jesus. In the middle of late-night talks with my roommates, long walks back from the library, moments of loneliness, moments of pure joy—He found me.”

She added, “CSU did not just give me a place to live, it gave me a place where my life was changed forever.”

Rendering shows new residence hall that mirrors Mead Hall.

ߣѿƬ Southern University is thrilled to announce its Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new residence hall on campus. The new building will mirror Barbara C. Mead Hall, built in 2019.

Construction is set to break ground this summer and be completed by August of 2026—in time to welcome Buccaneers that fall semester. The newest three-story suite-style residence hall will house 216 students.

“We take immense pride in our community, and this new residence hall will be a testament to that pride,” said Brittney Greer, associate VP for student life. “It’s more than just a building—it’s a space where students will form lasting connections, share the gospel, and grow in their faith. With state-of-the-art amenities and a strong focus on discipleship, we are committed to fostering a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to make a difference.”

With an increase in housing demand each year since Mead Hall, the university has utilized the Wingate Hotel on its campus for overflow housing—filling it for the last three years.

“This is an investment in the future of our Buccaneers and a response to the growth we have already seen and project for the future at ߣѿƬ Southern,” President B. Keith Faulkner said. “We are committed to providing high-quality spaces for our students as they grow in their faith while learning, leading, and serving. This new residence provides exactly what our students desire—a vibrant place where they will sleep, study, eat, work out, and find community.”

The 52,000-square-foot building will stand beside Mead Hall with a courtyard between the two residences for students to enjoy a fun outdoor community space. The newest residence hall will include:

  • Suite-style accommodations, with two furnished double-occupancy bedrooms, one bathroom, and a common living area;
  • Group study space available for residents located on each floor, including private study rooms on the 3rd floor;
  • A full kitchen on the 3rd floor for general or reserved use;
  • A grab-and-go Galley retail location on the 1st floor; and,
  • A fitness center on the 2nd floor with cardio and cable equipment.

Dean Murphy, chair of the CSU Board of Trustees, said, “In a time when many colleges and universities are seeing enrollments decline, CSU is experiencing record enrollments. The Board understands the importance of the on-campus experience for our students as they live together, attend classes together, and forge the relationships and bonds of friendship which they will carry with them throughout their lives. The addition of this new residence hall will enhance this experience.”

A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for April, followed by a grand opening event next year.

BUCSAFE Update from the President /bucsafe-update-from-the-president-23/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 13:12:18 +0000 /?p=331263 After careful review of recent guidance from the CDC, the consistent drop in COVID-19 cases on campus, reduced transmission levels in the ߣѿƬ area, our Community Immunity percentage, and vaccine accessibility, the University Pandemic Task Force has recommended we ease some BUCSAFE protocols. Beginning Tuesday, March 1, ߣѿƬ Southern University will shift to a mask-optional policy. This means face coverings will no longer be required in indoor facilities on campus.

COVID is still with us. We’re very aware of that fact. Transmission rates in our area have not yet reached low levels, but they have reached levels that square with CDC guidance to make this change. That said, the task force remains diligent in monitoring local conditions, following CDC guidance, and adhering to the milestones we have set to remain BUCSAFE. We trust you to do the same. Should levels rise significantly and public health guidance change appreciably, we will pivot as necessary to accomplish our mission and mind the health of our campus and our community.

As we continue to adjust to the pandemic’s impact, please keep in mind the heart of the BUCSAFE pledge: responsibility, flexibility, and understanding. One way you can do this is to show respect to those who still choose to wear a mask. If an employee, student, or guest asks for you to mask in their individual office, meeting space, or room, please be gracious in honoring that request or make alternate arrangements such as a Zoom meeting. As a courtesy to the health concerns of others, we still highly encourage physical distancing in the classroom and other indoor communal spaces around campus. We also will not be removing the plexiglass in our classrooms at this time. And as much as I would like for us to let ‘em burn, don’t burn those masks just yet. We’ll get there, but at this point you just never know.

Reporting

Students and employees who are symptomatic, are exposed, or test positive for COVID, should continue to report on the LiveSafe app or reach out to Dr. Laurel Glover. Limited rooms will remain available for quarantine and isolation for the remainder of the semester.

Events

Last week, we shared updated event guidelines that no longer require proposals for events that abide within set room capacities, limit outside guests, or do not involve live music. Organizers wishing to host events which require an exception to capacity limitations, involve more than five guests, or incorporate live music must still submit an at this time. Review the updated FULL event guidelines here

Health Resources

SCDHEC will shift its testing strategy on March 1. Due to the availability and accuracy of at-home tests, the agency will gradually decrease drive-thru testing sites. For now, MAKO Medical continues to offer free, on-site PCR testing in the football stadium parking lot each weekday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Should that change, we will alert the campus accordingly.

SCDHEC will also stop reporting daily COVID case counts beginning March 15. However, the agency will continue to report COVID hospitalizations and deaths, ICU bed availability, and hospital utilization rates. The University Pandemic Task Force will use that data as indicators of the impact of severity in the ߣѿƬ area as well. These metrics will also serve as reminders that COVID is still with us.

Stay #BUCSAFE

These changes bring us one step closer to a post-pandemic world. Praise the Lord! I am profoundly grateful for God’s faithfulness the last two years, how helpful and hardworking our pandemic task force has been 24/7 (you have no idea!), the effectiveness of our BUCSAFE and other protocols, and your collective diligence in reaching the 70% Community Immunity goal based on evidence of vaccination/test uploads and the number of positive cases on campus. The pandemic is not yet over, so we will continue to trust the Lord and thank Him for all who have made it possible to get here. We have come this far by faith, and that’s exactly how we’ll make it the rest of the way.

Keep doing what you’re doing – for the good of others and the glory of God!

BUCSAFE Update from the President /bucsafe-update-from-the-president-22/ Wed, 23 Feb 2022 22:23:24 +0000 /?p=330871 Cases on campus and off are drastically declining. Thank God! The University Pandemic Task Force has been monitoring community transmission rates very closely, and ߣѿƬ County has finally moved to the Substantial level of transmission after many, many weeks of High levels of cases, percent positivity, hospitalizations, and deaths. Berkeley and Dorchester counties remain at the High level, but our team will continue to watch as those numbers (hopefully and prayerfully) decline in the coming days. As a reminder, the following table indicates how these levels are calculated.

Here’s some good news for your Wednesday! Due to the drop in on-campus COVID cases, the task force has recommended additional steps forward as we approach the long-anticipated end of this global pandemic. Event guidelines have been updated to reflect just that! As of this week, event proposals are no longer required for events that abide within set room capacities, limit outside guests, and/or do not involve live music. If any event does include those, organizers must still submit an at this time. Review the updated FULL event guidelines here

This is not the time to end all BUCSAFE guidance, but we can be encouraged at the signs of progression to normalcy. Help us move that needle even quicker by uploading your proof of vaccination or a positive COVID test result from the last 90 days to our Community Immunity portal. We are closing in on our goal of 70% immunity on campus and a mask-burning party.

Our Numbers

Here are our numbers as of February 23, 2022:

  • TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN ISOLATION: 17
Of these 17 students, 1 is being housed on campus,  and 16 are isolating off campus. 13 are confirmed positive.
  • TOTAL NUMBER OF STUDENTS IN QUARANTINE: 9
Of these 9 students, 3 are being housed on campus,  and 6 are quarantining off campus.
  • TOTAL NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IN ISOLATION: 3 (2 confirmed positive)
  • TOTAL NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES IN QUARANTINE: 2

ISOLATION is reserved for actively symptomatic or known positive cases, and QUARANTINE is reserved for those who have been identified as a close contact of someone who is positive or who has symptoms. People in QUARANTINE are NOT ill – we are simply watching them to ensure they do not become symptomatic. LEARN MORE

Community Immunity Status Bucsafe Thermometer

Community Immunity Status

As of February 23, 2021:

  • Students: 51.8%
  • Faculty and Staff: 92%
  • TOTAL: 58.1%

Our goal is to reach 70% community immunity on campus, which includes proof of vaccination and/or evidence of natural immunity among those who have recently been infected with COVID-19.  Natural immunity includes those who have had a positive COVID test in the last 90 days.

Health Resources

Should you need a COVID test, MAKO Medical continues to offer free, on-site PCR testing in the football stadium parking lot each weekday from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Our on-campus healthcare partner, Fetter Health Care Network, brings their mobile clinic to the Student Center lot every Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. In addition to walk-up appointments for your medical needs, Fetter offers immunizations and rapid testing with advance notice. To book vaccines, COVID tests, or to schedule an appointment off campus, call 843-466-6129.

Please continue to reach out to Dr. Laurel  Glover  if you’re experiencing symptoms, have been exposed to the virus, or otherwise find it necessary to pursue testing. Do NOT go to class or to work if you feel sick.  Take care of yourself and others by staying home.

Stay #BUCSAFE

We have one more week (and two days) until Spring Break begins! Following the break, the task force and I will only send BUCSAFE communication on an as-needed basis rather than each Wednesday. This has been a long journey on some rough seas. But God has brought us through it all and will continue to do so. Let’s continue to pray for the end of this pandemic. Lord willing, we’re almost there.

Keep doing what you’re doing – for the good of others and the glory of God!

BUCSAFE Update from the President /bucsafe-update-from-the-president-21/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 05:26:49 +0000 /?p=330137 Our campus has continued to see an overall downward trend of COVID-19 cases. Praise God for that! Due to that consistent decrease, we reverted back to full in-person learning on Monday. This does not mean that we can throw all caution to the wind, however. Community transmission remains at the high level in Berkeley, ߣѿƬ, and Dorchester Counties, so please continue to follow our BUCSAFE guidance as we prayerfully watch numbers drop even more.

Many more in our CSU Family have received their vaccine or, unfortunately, caught the virus. If you fall into either of those categories, please upload your proof of vaccination or a positive COVID test result from the last 90 days to our Community Immunity portal. This gradual dive mimics what we’ve seen in other parts of the country and in our community, so we are hopeful this trend will continue in the days and weeks ahead. I’m certainly encouraged by this news.

Please remain vigilant, hopeful, and flexible with one another as the Omicron variant persists in Berkeley, ߣѿƬ, and Dorchester Counties, as well as on our campus. Our community transmission still resides at a high level.

Stay #BUCSAFE

A little over 100 years ago, our predecessors battled a two-year-plus flu pandemic. So much of history paints an eerily similar picture to what we face today. From what I know about our world history, I can certainly say that I am grateful to live in a day and age where science and technology have advanced as much as it has since the days of past pandemics. We are blessed beyond all measure.

Please join me in praying for our healthcare workers who have taken the brunt of the viral burden for 24+ months. For any of you with pandemic fatigue, find comfort in the promises of Jesus. He says in Matthew 11:28-30 to give all of your cares to him for his “yoke is easy” and his “burden is light.”

Keep doing what you’re doing – for the good of others and the glory of God!

This may be the first time in years that tonight’s Polar Bear Plunge is accurately named. Perhaps Omicron will take a dive on the charts soon, too. Transmission remains high with this variant in Berkeley, ߣѿƬ, and Dorchester Counties, as well as on our campus. As indicated in previous communication, we will maintain our current virtual allowances through next Friday to get us through this current surge.

Stay #BUCSAFE

Two years into a global pandemic and this CSU Family continues to make me proud because of your faith and resilience. We’re one step closer to this pandemic being in our rearview mirror. And if we’ve learned nothing else the last couple of years, we’ve certainly learned that we are stronger together. That’s a lesson for the ages:  “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV)

Keep doing what you’re doing – for the good of others and the glory of God!

BUCSAFE Update from the President /bucsafe-update-from-the-president-18/ Wed, 19 Jan 2022 23:19:06 +0000 /?p=327287 Let me be the first to say how much I appreciate all of your patience and understanding as we continue the journey to the end of the pandemic. I continue to be impressed by your grit, Buccaneer!

Earlier this week, we announced a temporary accommodation that authorizes faculty to determine if their class(es) are held in person or virtually as well as giving the same option to individual students. See the latest guidance here.

Transmission in the greater ߣѿƬ community and in our CSU community is at the highest level, so we remain committed to our BUCSAFE protocols to help us get through this surge.
