CSU plans to resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 3. We will send additional updates should there be any change in the forecast or road safety conditions. 

Dining: 
The Caf will remain open for residents from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Monday. Retail locations including Java City, Chick-fil-A, The Buc Stop, and The Galleys will remain closed unless conditions allow staff to safely travel. Follow the  for updates on locations and hours. 

Library: 
The Rivers Library will be open 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday. 

Campus Recreation: 
Though all intramural games are cancelled today and tomorrow, the Brewer Center will be open 2 – 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday. 

Athletics: 
The men’s basketball game vs. Gardner-Webb on Monday evening has been rescheduled to February 17.

As for Monday, February 2 operations, we are waiting to see the impacts this weekend as weather conditions could change. As of now, CSU will remain on a normal schedule for Monday, February 2. Out of an abundance of caution, employees should take home laptops and any necessary work material today. Residential students who happen to be traveling should also take any necessary textbooks and electronics should the university pivot to online learning early in the week.

• The Caf will be open as normal for breakfast and lunch but will close at 6 p.m. Breakfast and sandwich to-go bags as well as disposable take-home containers will be available for students who would like to avoid leaving their rooms during the storm.Ìý

• The Galley @ Russell will run normal hours.Ìý

• Ensure doors and windows are shut to keep warm air in and cold air out.Ìý

• Keep thermostats at a reasonable temperature (above 60 degrees).Ìý

• If on campus, report leaking or ruptured pipes to Facilities immediately.Ìý 

While outdoors: 

• Layer clothing! Outer garments should be water repellant. Wear a hat and mittens.Ìý 

• Cover your mouth with a scarf – this protects your face and, most importantly, your lungs.Ìý

• If traveling in a vehicle, take extra blankets and clothing; consider a winter car survival kit.Ìý

Invest 94L, on the other hand, is tracking closer to the southeastern U.S. For now, it is still too early to forecast its exact path. Local meteorologists expect that it will form into Imelda, possibly becoming a tropical depression near the Bahamas over the weekend. Most models have it tracking northwest or north over the southwestern Atlantic. 

As of now, CSU will remain on its current operating schedule. However, out of an abundance of caution, employees should take home laptops and unplug electronics in office spaces. As of 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 5, Chantal was located 150 miles south-southeast of ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬, moving north at 2 mph with a turn to the north-northwest expected later today, according to local forecasts. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 40 mph, with tropical storm-force winds primarily affecting the ocean and immediate coastal areas. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬ County coast. The ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬ area should expect heavy rainfall of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated areas seeing up to 6 inches, increasing the risk of flash flooding. Dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents are also expected along the coast. 

Though it is a holiday weekend during the summer, classes and offices are not impacted by this event. However, we have essential personnel and dining services available to current residents throughout the weekend. Whether you are on or off campus, this message remains true: if it is unsafe to travel at any point, please stay indoors.

Monitoring possible tropical conditions 

The ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬ Southern University Emergency Management Team is monitoring the probability of a tropical system forming off the coast of South Carolina this weekend. According to local forecasts, showers and storms have increased off the northeast Florida coast as a low-pressure system slowly drifts north, with a 60% chance of developing into a short-lived tropical or subtropical depression by Saturday, July 5. Regardless of development, heavy rain is expected in parts of Florida through early Saturday and along the Carolina coast later Saturday into Sunday. Forecast models differ slightly, with the American model showing higher coastal impacts than the European model, but significant effects are not expected at this time.Ìý

Severe weather is expected to impact most of the South Carolina Lowcountry on Wednesday, bringing thunderstorms with strong winds. The forecast includes sustained winds between 36 to 46 miles per hour with possible gusts up to 75 miles per hour. The National Weather Service issued a moderate wind advisory for ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow. The strongest part of the storm will occur closer to midday and will quickly move through the area. Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, so power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially on elevated bridges.

ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬ Southern University will extend online learning and remote work for Friday, January 24 due to continued hazardous road conditions in the greater ߣÓÑ¿´Æ¬ area. The CSU Emergency Management Team strongly advises our campus community to stay off the roads until conditions have improved.  

The campus gates will remain closed until further notice. Only CSU personnel and approved vendors will be allowed access and must present their CSU ID to enter campus. Food and grocery delivery services (i.e. Instacart, UberEats, etc.) are also allowed, but must check in with security upon entering campus. 

All events have been canceled or rescheduled for the remainder of the week. However, students attending the Converge conference this weekend should stand by for additional communication. At this time, Student Life is monitoring road conditions and will make a decision for travel tomorrow.  

The Women’s and Men’s Basketball doubleheader against UNC Asheville is still scheduled for Saturday, January 25 in the Buc Dome at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Women’s Tennis will play Saturday at 1 p.m. against Lees-McRae. The tennis home opener originally scheduled for today will be played on Tuesday, January 28. With temperatures dropping to highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s, possible precipitation late Tuesday and early Wednesday could bring snow, sleet, and ice to our area. October 13 – 19 is South Carolina Earthquake Preparedness Week 2024. Here are a few tips to remember in case of emergency. 

1. DROP to the ground 
2. COVER your head and neck while you crawl to shelter. You can do this with a book, by going under a desk, or with another object that is nearby.Ìý
3. HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops

It is also beneficial to have some disaster supplies on hand that can last for about three days. If you have any questions or want to learn more about earthquake safety you can find more information . 

Along with wind, there is the possibility of significant rain and possible flooding if you are located in a flood-prone area.

Tropical Storm Watch: conditions are favorable for a tropical storm to develop in your area. It’s a good time to evaluate your shelter plans and your emergency supplies.

Tropical Storm Warning: the possibility of a tropical storm hitting your area within the next 36 hours is probable.
